Erythroderma - Causes And Treatment

what is erythroderma?

Erythroderma is defined as a generalized skin disorder characterized by reddening and scaling of 100% of the skin. It often precedes or is associated with exfoliation (skin peeling off in scales or layers) when it may also be known as exfoliative dermatitis (ED). It is sometimes called the 'red man syndrome' when no primary cause can be found (idiopathic erythroderma).

Causes of Erythroderma

Erythroderma can arise from a variety of causes, most often as an extension of a pre-existing skin disorder like eczema, psoriasis, hodgkin's disease, leukemia. Erythroderma may also be due to an adverse drug reaction from drugs like dapsone, arsenic, penicillins, Sulphonylureas, gold and captopril.

Symptoms of Erythroderma

  • Red skin patches
  • Skin thickening
  • Skin peeling
  • Skin flaking
  • Feaver

Treatment of Erythroderma

  • Patients with erythroderma have great difficulty regulating body temperature and
care should be maintained not to become hypothermic.
  • Systemic steroids may be helpful in some cases but should be avoided in suspected cases of psoriasis and staphylococcal-scalded skin syndrome.
The following general measures apply:
  • Discontinue all unnecessary medications
  • Maintain skin moisture with wet dressings, emollients and mild topical steroids.
  • Monitor fluid balance and body temperature.
