Dry Eyes , is a condition many people face. It is caused when the tears produced by the eyes lack the moisture, lubrication, and other features that help keep the eye protected.

For most people who have dry eyes, it's a chronic condition. The goal of treatment is to reduce the number of "bad days," with hope to zero, and make the symptoms on the bad days as minimal as possible.

Causes of dry eyes

In addition to an imbalance in the tear-flow system of the eye, dry eye can be caused by the drying out of the tear film. This can be due to dry air created by air conditioning, heat, or other environmental conditions. Other conditions that may cause dry eyes are:

  • Disruption of your blink reflex
  • An allergic reaction to eye drops or ointments
  • Long-term contact lens wearing
  • Environmental irritants such as smoke, sun, wind, low humidity, high altitudes and indoor heating.
  • Environmental factors can also play a factor in eyes drying up.
  • Working or entertainment can also cause dry eyes.
  • People who watch TV, use the computer, or sew for period of time may cause eyestrain and dry eyes.

Symptoms of dry eyes

  • Discomfort in the eyes
  • Itchiness
  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Excessive tearing without relief
  • Feeling of presence of foreign object in the eyes
  • Discomfort after periods of eye strain like watching tv, reading, computer use, sewing, etc.

  • Using artificial tears
  • Reducing the draining away of the tears

How to get right dry eyes and home remedies to treat dry eyes

  • Wash face with ice cold water
  • Store creams in the refrigerator, as the coldness will also help reduce dry eyes
  • Drink plenty of water to clean out your system
  • Keep your home humidity between 30 percent and 50 percent
  • Make sure you get enough sleep with regular timings
  • Place strips of grated potato under your eyes to help reduce swelling
  • Wear glasses on windy days and goggles while swimming.
  • Eat healthy food containing eye nutrients especially with vitamin A, C, and E
  • When watching tv, using the computer or other eye straining activities, take frequent breaks
  • Dry eyes caused by problems with the meibomian glands and blepharitis generally respond to treatment with an antibiotic such as tetracycline
  • Stop Using Irritating Products. If you suspect your new eye shadow or eye cream is the offending agent, stop using them for sometime and see if the dry eyes goes away.
