Acanthosis nigricans is a light brown to black, poorly defined, velvety of the skin, usually present in the posterior and lateral folds of the neck, the axilla, groin, umbilicus, and other areas.

Causes of Acanthosis Nigricans

The exact cause of this acanthosis nigricans is unknown. It can be a genetic (inherited) condition.

  • Its begin at any age.
  • It is frequently found in people with diabetes.
  • Is associated with an endocrine disorder or a tumor.
  • Acanthosis Nigricans may also be caused by hormones problems.

Symptoms of Acanthosis Nigricans

Skin changes are the only signs and symptoms of acanthosis nigricans

  • Eventually
  • Dark
  • Velvety skin with very visible markings
  • Creases appears in the armpits, groin, and neck.

Sometimes, the lips, palms, soles of feet, or other areas may be affected.

The diagnosis of Acanthosis Nigricans is usually based on a physical exam. The doctor may recommend blood tests, X-rays or other tests to look for possible underlying causes. Sometimes a small skin sample is removed for examination in a lab.
