Men's skin care tips

More men than ever are interested in taking better care of their skin & a simple daily ritual of cleansing & moisturising will keep skin & hair looking healthy. Today’s men are increasingly aware and concerned about the health and appearance of their skin. Although men may be increasingly aware of how to care for their skin, some factors may be preventing them from doing so. For many men, skin care is a mere afterthought. Beyond the world of shaving their faces, it is rare for a man to devote time to his skin, especially the skin on his face. However, proper skin care is essential for the present and the future.

Daily face washing will keep pores unclogged, which in turn can prevent a variety of skin conditions, from pimples to ingrown hairs, which are not only painful and unattractive, but can also leave discolored marks on the skin's surface.

Shaving is the most typical start to a man's day, and it is the first area where they can make mistakes. Most shaving creams and pre-shave products, especially those geared toward men, contain irritating ingredients such as alcohol, menthol, mint, and camphor, as well as high levels of potassium or sodium hydroxide. These skin irritants make the hair follicle and skin swell, forcing the hair up and away from the skin, supposedly allowing for a closer shave. Unfortunately, the irritation and resulting swelling cause some of the hair to be hidden by the swollen follicle and skin. Note that sodium hydroxide is used in many skin-care products at very low levels (the lesser amount of an ingredient in a product, the lower it will be on the ingredient list on the label) to adjust the pH value. In these low quantities, it is not irritating to skin. Additionally, the swollen skin makes it harder for the stubble to find its way back out. If the hair begins to grow (which it does almost immediately) before the swelling is reduced, the likelihood of ingrown hairs is increased.

Shaving with a razor abrades the skin enough to cause havoc, but then men typically splash an alcohol-based aftershave lotion with irritating ingredients over that broken skin. Think of splashing aftershave on a cut or scrape on any other part of your body. Now, why would you want to do that to your face? Basic skin-care rule number one for both men and women: If the skin-care product you use burns, irritates, tingles, causes the skin to become inflamed, or hurts, don't use it.

Men’s skin care products available include moisturizing creams, cleansers, face and body wash, scrubs, exfoliants and night renewal cream. These products are targeted at men of all ages and skin types. Ingredients used in male skin care products can include a variety of natural ingredients for example sea salt, coconut, aloe vera and even beer. Each ingredient is researched and developed for different uses and different types of skin.

Eating a balanced diet and staying active are obviously part of the equation. Double up on the fruits and vegetables, which often contain many anti-oxidants that can retard skin damage. Take a multi-vitamin that is rich in anti-oxidants and vitamin E. Do your best to avoid greasy, fried food. Substitute olive oil in place of butter when you cook. It is healthier and, as some claim, will allow your skin to retain its elasticity longer.
