Eye Shadows - How to Apply Eye Shadows

Eye shadows leave a shiny or opaque finish depending on the time of make up and shape of eyes. To achieve the perfect daytime look with eye shadow, you need to follow some basic guidelines.

How to Apply Eye Shadow

Applying eye shadow can be a little tricky, but once you know the basics, you get to play with the colors that you have. A lot of women try one technique, like it and never vary it.. ever again.

  1. Select a light base shadow. Using a shadow brush, sweep it across your entire lid, from brow to lash line.
  2. Prime the eyelids by dusting them with a small amount of loose powder.
  3. Blend shadow by stroking the lid gently with an eye shadow brush. Don't use your finger you could wipe off the shadow entirely.
  4. Use a medium-toned shade to cover your lower lids.
  5. Use a cosmetic puff and a little pressed powder to tone down heavy shadow. Shake any excess powder off the puff, then press it gently on your lid.
  6. Contour the crease of your eyelid with a dark shade, using a smaller eye shadow brush.
  7. Choose three shades in the same color family - light, medium and a darker shade for contrast.
  8. Apply the lightest shade on the entire lid from brow to lash line.

Using eye shadow & eyeliner to create make your eyes look...

  1. Bigger :- The key to making eyes bigger is to focus on light shades. Dark ones will make eyes appear even smaller. Sweep a light shade over lid, then shade the outer corner of the lid & the crease with a darker shade.
  2. Closer together :- sweeping a light shadow over the whole eye area. Then dust a medium color on the inner half of the eyelid & blend outward to create a natural finish.
  3. Less deep-set :- Those with deep-set eyes have prominent brow bones. To downplay brow bone, sweep a light or medium-tone shade on lid, then shade in a slightly darker shade above the eye crease. Apply eyeliner from the inside of the eye, making it thicking in the middle of the eye & then tapering it towards the outer part of the lid. Lastly, apply light high lighter shade to browbone.
  4. Less droopy-set :- You can lift down-turned eyes with makeup. Apply shadow to the outer corner of the lid, extending color up & out like a feline shape. Add a light highligher color to brow bone & skip the eyeliner -- it will only accentuate the 'droopy' contour. Apply mascara, concentrating on the inner corner of the eye. Lastly, you can try smudging a silver show on the inner corners of the eyes to help 'lift' them.

Eye shadow Tips

  1. Use a touch of gold shadow on the brow bone to make your eyes look even brighter. You can use powder or one of those fat pencils. I have even used that liquid highlighter in a bottle and it gives good results too.
  2. Matte powder eye shadows in an array of neutral tones from light to dark are your best bets for a classic, sophisticated eye design that accents the shape and color of your eyes.
  3. Unless you’re using just one eye shadow color, use at least two eye shadow brushes for application.
  4. Pearly shades are great for highlighting the brow bone and opening up the eye area.
  5. Tap off any excess eye shadow from your brush before applying—this will prevent over application as well as flaking eye shadow.
Warnings :-
  • Don't share eye makeup or tools you can unknowingly transfer eye infections such as pinkeye (conjunctivitis).
  • If you get shadow in your eyes, flush them gently with tepid water.

Choosing Eye Shadow Color

The real secret to finding your perfect color of eye shadow is simple -- just look in the mirror! If your eyes are:

  • BROWN: Use shades of soft greens, ambers, and golds (these add instant depth and warmth).
  • BLUE: Use shadow that has brown undertones -- like terra cotta, peach, and purple.
  • HAZEL: Cool shades of blue-based lilacs and mauves will make the green and gold in your eyes more vibrant.
